The School of Medicine's Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy & Clinical Immunology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Healthcare Clinical Operations Professional (Open Rank: Entry-Senior), HLA Serology Technologist (Evening Shift) position.

Jobs in the Healthcare career family are responsible for performing a wide range of professional duties to support the university's ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, research and/or service missions through the provision of health and wellness services, dealing with general, indirect patient care operations and management of healthcare services. Functions include hospital administration, healthcare regulatory compliance, patient relations, operational services, admissions, and medical records. Includes professional assignments in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, counseling and behavioral health, public health, dietetics and nutrition, other allied health fields, alternative medicine and therapies, and related disciplines.

Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals. At the senior level, work is performed fully independently.

Nature of Work:

This position performs clinical laboratory testing to determine ABO and MHC compatibility of transplant recipients and donors which includes HLA antibody screening and crossmatching. This position adheres to the standards of external regulatory bodies including ABHI, CAP, and CLIA, and understands the principles of histocompatibility and immunogenetics. This role prepares reagents while adhering to strict quality control guidelines and performs and documents instrument function checks and preventive maintenance. The successful professional will work independently and with others, readily adapt to changes in the work environment, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, communicate effectively with others, participate in on-call activities and continuing education, and demonstrate initiative in accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.

Examples of Duties Performed:

All levels, with increased independence at higher levels:
  • Accessions samples into database, verifies acceptability of specimens for testing, and ensures appropriate requisition accompanies each sample for testing.
    • Evaluate specimens for proper labeling and verify that the label matches the sample ID on the requisition.
    • Familiar with database codes and lists for HLA testing, race, billing, transplant type, physicians, and donor relationship.
    • Uses database templates as appropriate.
    • Documents unacceptable samples, and contacts clinician for redrawing as needed.
    • Documents test request changes made by clinician.
  • Understands the principles and procedures of clinical histocompatibility testing. Learns test protocols for ABO red cell typing.
    • Performs forward and reverse red cell ABO blood grouping procedure, including quality control, documentation of results and recognizes atypical results.
    • Maintains sample identity and integrity throughout sample logging, processing, testing, and reporting of results.
  • Learns and performs HLA panel reactive antibody (PRA) procedure and protocol for screening of patient sera; demonstrates a working knowledge of different screening methods and understands variations in sensitivity of those techniques.
    • Handles testing kits according to protocol.
    • Identifies unacceptable samples (e.g., anticoagulated blood)
    • Processes and catalogs patient sera according to protocol; maintains sample identity.
    • Uses appropriate controls and evaluates the validity of test results based on the expected reactivity of controls.
    • Analyzes reaction patterns to determine PRA and identify antibody specificity; recognizes private and public antibody specificities; familiar with CREGs.
  • Performs class I and II crossmatches on recipient/donor pairs according to written protocol.
    • Selects appropriate sera and target cells for testing.
    • Uses appropriate method based on patient profile.
    • Includes necessary controls to validate test performance; recognizes limitations of the test and consults supervisor with atypical reactions.
    • Interprets test results accurately; reviews the patient file for sensitization history, disease, previous crossmatch results and PRA history to aid in interpretation.
    • Completes and reports results within 6 hours of test request.
  • Actively participates in quality assurance program.
    • Performs and documents necessary instrument and equipment function checks and quality control procedures in accordance with expected ranges.
    • Monitors reagent inventory and notifies supervisor before additional reagents are needed.
    • Participates in reagent preparation, checks pH, and documents necessary information in the reagent logbook.
    • Reviews the procedure manual at least annually and new or revised protocols as they are established.
    • Participates in continuing education activities, including annual re-training in laboratory safety issues in handling bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, hazardous wastes, and fire.
    • Performs annual unknown testing of a previously characterized sample for each test that is performed in the lab, including samples from external proficiency testing programs.
  • Records results accurately and concisely communicates them as needed to transplant personnel.
    • Verifies the presence of appropriate paperwork including test requisition, HLA typing sheets, and summary report prior to review by supervisor and/or director.
    • Double-checks all paperwork for accuracy and completeness prior to review by supervisor and/or director.
    • Completes reports and relays results in a timely fashion; notifies appropriate personnel when further testing is needed and when results will be ready.
    • Notifies Supervisor of reporting errors found and follows through with necessary documentation.
  • Work ethic: performs assays according to established protocols, follows safety guidelines, uses universal precautions, and works well with others and independently.
    • Follows all established policies and protocols related to testing, reagent preparation, and quality control.
    • Participates in the introduction and implementation of new procedures and in the evaluation of new instruments.
    • Willing to take on-call responsibilities and work unscheduled hours; manages daily work schedule and time effectively.
    • Demonstrates effective and pleasant communication skills and human relations; provides quality customer service.
    • Notifies Supervisor and/or Director of assay or equipment malfunctions, which compromise test quality.
    • Performs additional tasks as requested by Supervisor and/or Director.
    • Organizes workload for maximum efficiency; assists co-workers and performs their duties when daily work is completed; contributes to a positive working environment.
    • Maintains a clean and safe working environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:
  • A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
Intermediate Level:
  • A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) year of professional level experience in an accredited HLA laboratory
Senior Level:
  • A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional level experience in an accredited HLA laboratory

Preferred Qualifications:

All Levels:
  • Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g., EMR or HER and data management systems)
  • Certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or ABHI Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) or certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, MT(ASCP)

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at the following:

Entry Level: $51,378 to $65,353

Intermediate Level: $55,911 to $71,119

Senior Level: $60,445 to $76,886

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
