Essential Job Duties:
Join NC State University as a Fire Alarm Technician II and help support the critical electronic infrastructure that keeps our campus safe, efficient, and connected. As part of our Building Maintenance and Operations unit, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing fire alarm essential systems. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, repair, and upgrade campus fire alarm systems to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Replace critical system components such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, annunciator panels, and remote panels.
  • Configure and commission fire alarm control systems using software engineering principles and electronic diagnostic tools.
  • Support and maintain the Facilities Operations radio systems.
  • Service and troubleshoot a variety of computer-based and electronic systems used across the division.
  • Perform hardware and software preventive maintenance (PM) to extend system life and prevent failures.
  • Implement hardware and software repairs, adjustments, and performance improvements across all assigned systems.
  • Perform tasks requiring standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and utilizing various tools. Safely climb and work from different types of ladders to access elevated or below-grade areas (such as roofs, above-ceiling spaces, and utility pits). Be exposed to and work in areas where insects or small animals are occasionally present. All essential tasks must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Lift and transport materials weighing up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations and perform a wide range of physically demanding tasks in varied outdoor environments, ensuring safe handling practices and maintaining productivity in varying weather and terrain conditions.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Hours subject to change to meet the needs of the University. Required use of safety equipment.
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Associate's Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in electronic fire protections systems and maintenance.
  • Must be able to communicate effective verbally with supervisors and the general public, and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • General maintenance and repair work can involve activities like standing for long periods, climbing ladders, working in cramped or uncomfortable positions, and using various tools.
  • Job will require you to be on ladders (A Frame, Step, Extension, Fixed) to access elevated and below grade work areas (roofs, above ceilings, utility pits)
  • Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds occasionally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Progressive experience in electronic fire protection systems and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of local, state and national codes.

Required license or certification:

  • North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
