Essential Job Duties:
Join our team in a role that directly supports the safety, health, and wellbeing of our campus community. As a Building Safety Inspector, you'll play a vital part in maintaining safe, code-compliant facilities while collaborating with a wide network of partners.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct annual inspections of assigned buildings to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes, as well as recognized safety standards
  • Partner with key stakeholders-including NC DOI/OSFM, Facilities, Housing, and the City of Raleigh-to promote a safe and compliant campus environment
  • Respond to fire and medical incidents on University property, providing care at the NC EMT-B level when needed
  • Assist with hazardous materials response to support campus safety
  • Contribute to housing inspections as program needs evolve
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule (one week at a time) to ensure continuous coverage
Must Have
  • Advanced knowledge of the State building Code, NFPA Standards and NC DOI/OSFM expectations.
  • Physical agility, the ability to do heavy lifting (up to 90 lbs.), enter into hazardous environments, ability to wear PPE, and be able to drive vehicles during an emergency
  • Must have knowledge of properly handling Hazardous Materials, storage and use of, as well as related Federal, State, and University regulations, rules, and policies to include OSHA guidelines.
  • Must have or obtain Hazardous Materials Operations PLUS certification or other consistent Haz-Mat training from other qualified state providers offering for certification in understanding of, and properly handling of, hazardous materials.
  • Must be knowledgeable about how to conduct and assess equipment functionality for sprinkler testing.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Be willing to work assignments as necessary including athletics events and special assignments. Work with Housing staff and committees as deemed appropriate to ensure Housing units are properly inspected, students are properly educated in life safety procedures that are defined by the US Department of Education and/or Directors of University Housing and Fraternity & Sorority Life. This position requires the employee to wear a department furnished uniform according to policy. Other duties/responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the University Fire & Life Safety Manager.
  • Serve in on-call rotation with other Fire & Life Safety staff
  • Other duties/responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the University Fire & Life Safety Manager.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Bachelor's degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications:
* Must have an advanced knowledge of the State building Code, NFPA Standards
and NC DOI/OSFM expectations.
* Ability to make code based decisions without consulting others in EHS.
* Ability to read & interpret codes, rules and guidelines.
* Ability to use associated documents and manuals to complete certain job
responsibilities.
* Maintain N.C. EMT- B level certification through in-service training provided by the department.
* Document medical care provided to the sick or injured in approved format and report form.
* Maintain emergency medical equipment in a constant ready state.
* Ability to treat all patients with approved and recognized protocols set forth by the Wake County Medical Director.
* Ability to work with Student Health on campus to ensure students receive proper attention expected by University Policy.
* Must have knowledge of properly handling Hazardous Materials, storage and use of, as well as related Federal, State, and University regulations, rules, and policies to include OSHA guidelines.
* Must have or obtain Hazardous Materials Operations PLUS certification or other consistent Haz-Mat training from other qualified state providers offering for certification in understanding of, and properly handling of, hazardous materials.
* Must be knowledgeable about how to conduct and assess equipment functionality for sprinkler testing.
* Advanced knowledge of the N.C. fire code, building code, and NFPA standards.
* Ability to conduct required inspections of buildings assigned for violations of local, state, and federal codes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all building occupants.
* Ability to identify deficiencies and put them in report form for corrective action.
* Ability to work with appropriate building/University staff to ensure corrective action of building deficiencies in a timely and cost effective manner while meeting the legal requirements.
* Ability to assist with emergency evacuation plans as needed.
* Ability to conduct/evaluate emergency evacuation drills in building for compliance of the N.C. Fire code and US Department of Education standards.
* Knowledge of accepted educational practices in public education.
* Knowledge of techniques used to educate young adults.
* Ability to communicate with and work with other University staff and Departments to reach a common goal of fire/life safety across the University community.
* Ability to develop a strong relationship with campus departments, students, staff, and faculty by making site visits and giving presentations at functions.
* Demonstrates the ability to work as a team member with other departments and university constituents.
* Knowledge of workplace policies and procedures.
* Demonstrates understanding of why policies and procedures are critical to workplace safety and health.
* Ability to reference these policies and procedures so corrective actions can be made.
* Ability to communicate safety and health tips to the Campus community.
* Ability to communicate openly and effectively through interpersonal interactions and written communication.
* Ability to develop a good working relationship with building liaisons.
* Demonstrates support of the University Fire and Life Safety through proactively
reaching out to the University community in offering educational support.
* Ability to use sensitivity and respect while providing medical care to all patients.
Protect patients' personal information according to NC Law.
* Demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out ICS operations on incident
scenes.
* Activity demonstrates the ability to follow policies and procedures.
* Ability to communicate to others the importance of the policies and procedures to reduce workplace injuries.
* Ability to recognize, document, and report any workplace safety issues in order to implement corrective

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in fire inspections, Hazardous Materials Operations.
  • Plus certification, fire alarm and fire sprinkler system testing.
  • Advanced knowledge of N.C. fire code, building code, NFPA standards.

Required license or certification:

  • EMT-B required at start date and must be maintained.
  • Certified as a Firefighter II.
  • Valid driver's license is required at start date and must maintained.
