Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business is seeking a Research Associate to join its team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a dynamic and intellectually challenging environment.

In this role, you will collaborate with Professor Emily Diana to investigate how humans engage with large language models in learning and knowledge acquisition. The project examines the strategies and decision-making processes individuals use to determine when and how to leverage AI tools, balancing short-term efficiency with long-term knowledge development.

This work has direct applications to classroom learning, academic research, and organizational policies for employee development. There may also be opportunities to collaborate with researchers across Carnegie Mellon and with industry partners.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Review literature related to the emerging use of AI technologies

  • Leading the mathematical modeling process and guide the development of a theoretical and algorithmic framework

  • Performing an empirical analysis or investigating the possibility of data collection for empirical work

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required; Current PhD student in the 4th or 5th year in computer science, operations research, or related field preferred

  • 1-3 years of research experience

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Additional Information:

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.

  • This is a full-time (37.5 hours), exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA

  • Fixed Term: This is a fixed-term position with an estimated duration of two months.
