Department Summary
The Field Research Technician will assist with biological field research in Kohli's ecology research lab. Responsibilities include collecting and managing biological data, performing data entry and analysis, organizing and processing tissue and other biological samples, generating research reports and summaries, assisting with trapping small mammals, setting up and monitoring camera traps, and traveling to and exploring field sites.
Position Profile
Establishes, implements, and monitors laboratory policies and procedures. Ensures lab operations are efficient, effective, and comply with established procedures. Provides instruction to students, faculty, and staff on safe laboratory procedures. Issues laboratory materials, equipment, etc. Maintains laboratory equipment.
Level Summary
Applies established standards independently through a broad and deep knowledge of processes in a particular area. Serves as a resource and guide to others in the department and/or University in questions of policy and procedure. Typically supervises or oversees the work of other TAS and/or student employees.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise student employees, TAS 1, TAS 2, or TAS 3 staff. May have a limited number of direct reports.
Fiscal Responsibilities
May have budgetary responsibilities for a work unit.
Problem Solving
Solves complex, non-routine problems that likely require research and analysis. Serves as a point of escalation for other TAS staff. Brings inquiries to resolution.
Independence of Action
High level of autonomy in managing tasks, challenges, and escalations.
Communication and Collaboration
Communicates with senior leadership, customers, and internal and external stakeholders. May present in high-stakes meetings or conferences.
Physical Requirements
This role is primarily field-based and involves extensive time working outdoors, sometimes in remote areas and under harsh conditions. Occasionally, the job may require overnight travel, with lodging ranging from hotels to camping for multiple nights.
Minimum Qualifications
Specialized knowledge of job functions, requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 5-7 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with seasonal biological fieldwork, experience with safe and ethical handling of small mammals, knowledge of Ohio mammals and flora.
